Hon. Justice Akintola Olufemi Ejiwunmi

 

His Birth:

He was born on May 27, 1936 at Massey street dispensary (Now Massey Children’s Hospital) of Alli Street to Chief Folawewo Ejiwunmi and Chief (Mrs) Josephine Ibitomi Ejiwunmi.

 

Early Life:

The young Ejiwunmi started his kindergarten Nursery school education at the CMS Grammer school, Broad street, Lagos in 1940 and enrolled for preparatory classes at the same school four years later.

 

Akintola Olufemi Ejiwunmi was enrolled into CMS Grammer school in 1945 and proceeded to Methodist Boy’s High School, MBHS in 1948 on his father’s request to complete his secondary education.

 

In 1957, Ejiwunmi proceeded to the United Kingdom for his University education in England. He studied Law at the University of Hull, East Yorkshire between 1958 and June 1961.

 

The Bar:

After enrolment at the Supreme Court of Nigeria in 1962, Ejiwunmi worked with the Law Chambers of Joseph Adetuyi Cole and later accepted an offer to work in the Ministry of Justice in Ibadan in 1963. In the same year, he obtained a scholarship to study International Air and Space Law, Comparative Common Law, Code Civil and Air Criminal Code of Canada at McGill University, Montreal Canada after which he returned to Ibadan in1964 to resume work as Crown Counsel in the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. On the creation of Lagos State in 1967, he was transferred to Ikeja Office of the Ministry of Justice as pioneer staff of the ministry.

 

Marriage:

On July 29 1967, the young Lawyer Ejiwunmi took former Miss Ivie Aigbe to the alter to take their marriage vows. They are blessed with five children and many grand children.

 

The Quintessential Advocate:

In 1974, Ejiwunmi became the director of Public Prosecution (DPP) in Lagos State and later became the Solicitor General in 1978.

 

This position he held until May 23, 1979 when he was elevated to the bench as a judge of the High Court of Lagos State.

 

The Bench:

Three years after becoming a judge of the High Court of Lagos State, an invitation was extended to Hon. Justice Ejiwunmi to serve as Judge of the Supreme Court of The Gambia which he eventually accepted as an honour.

 

In 1988, he returned to Nigeria after concluding his service to The Gambia to take up appointment as a Justice of the Court of Appeal. He searved in the Benin, Enugu and Abuja divisions of the Court of Appeal and was instrumental to the setting up of The Calabar Division.

 

On his mother’s post humus birthday, precisely on November 26, 1998, Justice Ejiwunmi was elevated to the bench of the Highest Court of the land, the Supreme Court of Nigeria. Hon. Justice Akintola Olufemi Ejiwunmi retired from the supreme Court on his 70th birthday on May 27th 2006.

 

Some Honourary Awards:

  1. Hon. Justice Ejiwunmi was deservedly given the National honour of the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) in 2004.
  2. On 10th May, 2006, he was given the Episcopal Award by His Grace Dr. Ephraim Adebola Ademowo, The Lord Bishop of Lagos and ArchBishop of the Province of Lagos in recognition of services rendered to God and Humanity.

 

Some Appointments:

  1. On March 15, 2006 His Lordship was appointed Chairman of the Presidential Commision on Reform of the Administration of Justice System in Nigeria.
  2. Hon. Justice Ejiwunmi was appointed a full-time member of the Police Service Commission early 2008 a position he held until his passing on.
